Ye Are the Light and The Salt of The World

Ye Are the Light and The Salt of The World

eorits

I saw a vision of a bright light shining from above and then saw written on a sign board Salted.

So, I went on to do my research on what the scriptures say about ‘Light and Salt’.

In the book of Matthew 5: 13-16. Jesus told his disciples, ‘You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.

As Christians, we are called to be salt for the earth to bring out the truth and goodness of the world not only in ourselves but in others.

Salt for The Earth

To be salt means to deliberately seek to influence the people in one’s life by showing them the unconditional love of Christ through good deeds. In other words, as the salt of the world, Christians are to add divine flavor to the world and at the same time become preservatives, encouraging fellow humans to move away from the moral decadence of this sinful world.

We cannot live the Christian life in isolation. For our Lord Jesus Christ wants us to become the salt of the earth and the light of the world. As salt, Christians are to counteract the power of sin. Sin can be referred to as weeds that choke the righteous life out of a Christian, thereby leaving the Christian to wallow in pain, sadness, and subsequently death. The bible says ‘The wages of sin is death’.

Our Lord Jesus goes further to say that if we lose our saltiness, we are no longer good for anything. Losing our saltiness could mean we have become contaminated and corrupted by the world culture. And when salt is contaminated, it becomes corrosive and poisonous. If and when we allow disobedience, carelessness, and indifference to rule our lives, we become contaminated and lose our saltiness. At this point, we must confess our sins and allow the Lord Our God to restore us to the purpose for which we are called.

The Light for The World

Christ also called us to be light for the world; advising us not to put our light under a bushel but rather to let it shine.

‘You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bushel instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house’.

In the same way, let your light shine before others so that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven. As light, we are called to illuminate the world. Our lives with the illumination from the Father of Light, are to be ongoing witnesses to the reality of God’s presence in our lives.

Worship God In Truth and Spirit

When we worship God in truth and Spirit, when we love God, love others as ourselves and when we do good without getting weary, then we demonstrate God’s light in our lives which is seen and recognized by the world. In the book of Philippians 2:15, the Apostle Paul says ‘Believers, you are to shine as lights in the world’. Light directs to safety and provides hope for those who have lost hope.

Light is a symbol used to demonstrate awareness, knowledge, and understanding. Just like salt that loses its saltiness, a hidden light is useless. For us to truly become the salt and light that Jesus declares us to be, we must interact with the world around us.

Father of Light

Our Lord Jesus is the ‘Father of Light’. For us to be the light of the world, we must follow Jesus who is the father of light. And when we follow the Father of Light, we become light ourselves in the world and thereby never walk in darkness. Darkness always flees at the entrance of light. In the book of John 1:5, the Apostle says, ‘And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not’.

To be qualified as Light, we must accept Christ as our Lord and Personal Savior and diligently seek the Kingdom of God and its righteousness.  Being righteous means the state of being morally correct and justifiable- The righteousness of God can only be attained by faith because Our Father chooses the individual from the foundation of the world for righteousness. So, we access the righteousness of God by faith and not by works. piety, emotions, choice or commitment, or intellect. In accepting Christ and living a righteous life, we must seek the opportunity to be light in someone else’s life.

In addition, these opportunities to shine the light on ourselves and others may only present themselves one time, therefore, we must seize the opportunities when they present themselves.

And we must accept Christ and also lead people to our Lord Jesus Christ.

The Truth and Goodness

Therefore, we are called to be salt for the earth to bring out the truth and goodness of the world not only in ourselves but in others; Christ also called us to be light for the world. Our Loving Father Jesus advises us not to put our light under a bushel basket but rather to let it shine.

Salt and light are Preservatives and Sanitizers

Finally, I conclude by saying that both salt and light are preservatives and sanitizers and necessary for any beautiful garden to flourish.  For example, in a garden, we use salt to kill unwanted weeds. In this context, weeds represent sins in the life of a believer which the salt helps to dry out and kills, and the light in the garden enables the growth of a healthy life.

Human beings are multi-faceted and so are not perfect in every facet of their lives (their garden)  As Christians, it is important therefore to engage fellow children of God with a mindset of discovering first, what aspects of our lives as Christians have weeds that need to be dehydrated and killed as we also reach out across the aisle to engage others in support of their self-discovery of the weeds in their lives (their garden) that need to be dehydrated and killed.

All Praises belong to God, Our Father of Light: To our Lord Jesus Christ: And to The Holy Spirit of The Living God. Hallelujah!
